Ugh, that is awful.
I was with a group nosing around the Lower Ninth Ward last year and we came across a Zeitoun Painting sign in front of one of these houses: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sassycrafter/3166089616/. It was about the most hopeful thing I could have imagined.

Enough with the "death of fiction" pieces too. Fiction is telling stories, and storytelling is inherently human.

I love, love Murakami's work. Just as you wouldn't ask for the strongest curry in your first visit to a curry shop, though, you must approach his writing carefully. A good first would be 'Norwegian Wod,' perhaps his most mainstream, with just enough of the magic realism to make you get a sense of what's to come. Graduate further into deeper Murakami with Sputnik Sweetheart, The Wild Sheep Chase, Dance Dance Dance, Kafka on the Shore, and then the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. Save 1Q84 for last; not his best, but very satisfying, especially when you find all of the little gifts he has left in the book from his other novels. Enjoy your curry!

Murakami has definitely been on everyone's lips lately, especially since 1Q84 came out a couple months ago. I've heard that The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and Sputnik Sweetheart are the best books to start with to get a good grasp of his style.

[...] Speaking of Paris, have you heard about this book, Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting? In the UK, it’s called French Children Don’t Throw Food. Presumably the US publishers paused for a minute and thought, “Wait a minute, didn’t we just publish a book called French Women Don’t Get Fat? We better call it something else, non, mon ami? Oui?” The Guardian’s John Crace is calling merde du taureau in another hilarious Digested Read. The French is especially atrocious. Like mine. The picture of the french kid with a cheesy mustache, baguettes, and an ashtray tied to his head is a nice touch as well.
No, it's definitely not a spoiler to write that Hadley and Hemingway's marriage didn't last, but it's always fascinating to get a glimpse of the other side of the story. Hemingway's a literary icon, but as you said, his work would have been dramatically different without Hadley Richardson.

I've been told that I must see Midnight in Paris, although Owen Wilson seems a bit incongruous to me in any role having to do with that place and time . . . .
