Excellent post, Tim. “Because The Night” was a straight-up Springsteen composition during the “Darkness” sessions, but with his blessing, she took the tune and added some of her own lyrics, resulting in a joint writing credit on her version. (Springsteen never released his, at least not as a studio recording. At least one live version by Springsteen was officially released, and it bore the joint writing credit, even though it’s the original version with none of Patti’s lyrics. Odd.) Anyway, stone-cold classic song. It’s maybe the only example I can think of where another artists’s cover equalled (or maybe bested) The Boss’ version. I need to read this book.

Great piece. I’m looking forward to reading that book. And I’m pleased you list “Good Fortune” — I remember the day I listened to that CD for the first time. When I got to that song, I had to check the credits to make sure Patti Smith wasn’t singing on that song.

Wow Tim, I don’t know much about either artist and frankly didn’t think I cared but after reading your review the book is going on my list to read.
