My Best of 2008
For the second year in a row, I managed to read a lot of not-so-memorable books this year. The good news is that I was able to think of ten that are at least worth recommending, although I’ve divided my year-end list into two tiers:
First, the “no question about it, I totally recommend these books” list:
- The Story of a Marriage by Andrew Sean Greer (review)
- Jim the Boy by Tony Earley (review)
- The Blue Star by Tony Earley (review)
- Little Brother by Cory Doctorow (review)
- This is Your Life by John O’Farrell (review)
- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (review)
The second tier are books that I found very worthwhile, but can’t say that they would work for everyone:
- Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad (review)
- Shut Up, I’m Talking by Gregory Levey (review)
- Rock On by Dan Kennedy (review)
- Q&A by Vikas Swarup (review)
Lastly, I’ll at least mention a few other works:
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald (short and a good read, but I feel an inexplicable need to choose sides between this work and The Confessions of Max Tivoli, by Andrew Sean Greer, both of which share a similar underlying premise, and I choose Greer’s book)
- The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli (this snuck in under the wire at the end of last year and made my 2007 list, but it bears repeating that everyone should read this book)
- On the Road by Jack Kerouac (I’ll likely finish this before the end of the year, and I love what I’ve gotten through so far; I think I’ve read this one at least twice before, but for some reason it’s resonating with me much more this time).

Thank you! For reminding me that The Confessions of Max Tivoli has been on my TBR list for waaaay too long — I need to dig that one out and finally read it!
Love your site. Will be back for more.
