Misc
The week is officially on its downward slope. Where does the time go? The shortlist of things that have not yet made it into a post this week but should have:
- It’s Banned Books Week. As a refresher, it is the American Library Association’s campaign in support of books that have been banned, not in support of banning books. The most banned book of 2006? — a book that tells the true story of two “gay” penguins and the baby they raised.
- The 6th Annual Blogger BoobieThon in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation is underway all week long.
- The Wren’s Nest is hosting a benefit concert in their sizable back yard this Saturday, October 6. The League of Decency is playing and barbecue will be served. There’s no mention of beer sales. I can only assume that means that should bring your biggest cooler. Probably the one with wheels.
- Steven King published an essay in the New York Times Book Review last Sunday that echoes the chorus that the American Short Story is on its last legs.

I’m incensed. Our own nutjob in Gwinnett County, the one who is trying to get Harry Potter banned, couldn’t even do a good enough job to make the top ten. She’s really falling down on the job, which is especially galling since we know she doesn’t waste her time reading books.

Forgive us, we’re amateurs!
Yes! There will be beer sales! The staff at the Wren’s Nest wouldn’t think about hosting a party without beer.
We’ll have a fine selection of wine, in addition to a few different kinds of beer. I think Sam Adams, Sam Adams Octoberfest, 420, Blue Moon, and Amstel Light. Don’t hold me to that, though.
In other news, I second that recommendation for the Steven King Article. Go Kenyon Review!

Herm: Have you been watching the news? I always thought that the Nazis in Gwinnett were figurative. It turns out that at least one was literal.
Lain: Glad to hear that beer will be on hand. However, I will not be able to make this one. I’m comforted that the Wren’s Nest web site refers to a concert “series”. Hopefully the next in the series (Kingsized?) will not conflict with my beach plans.

Tim, seriously, not to be fawning on your own blog, but you’re full of great ideas.
While we use the word “series” very, very, ridiculously loosely, Kingsized was exactly who I had hoped and dreamed for next…unofficially, of course. Who knows though, the Wren’s Nest may very well be full of surprises.

Excellent! Make it happen…on a weekend when I’m in town.
