I’ve made no secret of my disdain for graphic novels. I just think that life is too short for grown people to go around reading comix. But Slate has just published one that I can finally get behind: a black-and-white comic about a cartoon figure who saw the world in black and white.

Rather than try to correct your woefully misplaced disdain for the comix - for shame - I’ll simply ask: Where’s the commentary from H.I. McDunnough?
H.I.: I tried to stand up and fly straight, but it wasn’t easy with that sumbitch Reagan in the White House. I dunno. They say he’s a decent man, so maybe his advisors are confused.

I enjoy graphic novels because the good ones are about telling a story through both visual and textual mediums, employing a unique and wonderful richness. That said, I don’t tend to read many of them; in general I prefer books, just like I prefer books to TV even though there are TV shows I think highly of. I think of it as a matter of personal preference, though, rather than inherent quality. After all, there are plenty of space-wasting books, too. I could certainly name a few.
