Spook Country

Another book that needs to be added to my TBR stack, somehow, is the new William Gibson novel, Spook Country. The elder statesman of cyberpunk and the man who coined the phrase “cyberspace” well before there was an internet always has something interesting to say. I came to his work late. The first Gibson novel that I read was his previous novel, Pattern Recognition. It was an interesting read because it took place in the unseen recesses of the recent past. His new novel follows that basic timeline. I’ve since gone back and read some of his early classics.

Spook Country was reviewed by my internet hero Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing yesterday. Wired calls the novel “dictation from the zeitgeist”. Amazon featured a fascinating Q&A with the author about writing in the age of Google. I’m going to need to quit my job if I’m going to make my way through all the reading that needs to get done.

I just read about that book on today’s GetTrio e-mail. I (accidentally) caught him doing a reading at the Georgia Tech (natch) B&N a few years ago. He was charmingly nervous in front of his adoring crowd.

Yes, read it. It’s jumpy and stylish and it made me jumpy, in a good way (though no more stylish…alas). One of his best, I thought.
