[...] If you’ve read and were moved by Dave Eggers’ novel about Sudanese civil-war and genocide, What is the What, then you need to run - don’t walk - over to Google Earth. The coolest map toy in the world has partnered with The US Holocaust Memorial Museum to bring actual pictures of the atrocities that are taking place now in the Darfur region. You can zoom in on destroyed cities, click on embedded pictures, read eyewitness testimonies, etc. I had no idea that the USHMM was doing this kind of work, but God bless ‘em. It sure makes it a lot harder for governments to deny this is happening when anyone can check out the evidence for themselves. Here’s a screen shot of what you can expect: You can read our reviews of What is the What here and here. Read our account of the Dave and Valentino reading here. Check out McSweeney’s list of things that you can do for Sudan while you’re at it. [...]

I've had the book for a while now, but I haven't gotten to it. It is now officially moving up a few places in line.

The McSweeny's books are definitely made for people who love books. What I like about this unread McSweeney's book is that it is an odd size. The pages are wider than most books. The text looks very crisp and clean on the page. Now I just need to read it.

Good point on the design of the McSweeney's books. This book also has a very cool jacket/sleeve.

You know how sometimes you're not sure whether to recommend a book because maybe the person has different tastes than you. Well - I can definitely say that there is no way that you won't be floored by this book. Mr. Nitro started reading it and was up until 1 am last night because he couldn't put it down.

I'm moving this to the "must" list as well. I'm currently in the middle of "A Heartbreaking Work" and love Eggers' writing style and storytelling skills. And I'm an avid supporter of the Lost Boys (having purchased two clay animals as a Valentine's Day present for Mrs. Shaft this very morning).

Your write-up just moved this to the very top of my "must get" list. I loved "A Heartbreaking Work . . ." and also enjoyed "You Shall Know Our Velocity" a lot.

On a related note, don't you love the design of most of McSweeney's books? Many of them are just really cool little objects, in addition to being good reads.
