I was underwhelmed by The Known World. I guess there are people out there who don’t know that there were free blacks in the South before the Civil War, that those people faced enormous pressures, and that many suffered very human tragedies. Those folks will probably be bowled over by this book. But if you know that already, my guess is that the writing isn’t going to win you over. It didn’t me, anyway.
