Extremely Loud Discussion
I missed this since I was traveling for work last week, but Slate ran a multi-day discussion of Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I loved his first book (not everyone did), Everything Is Illuminated. Govern yourself accordingly.

New York magazine reviewed it this week and it was not a good review. The reviewer felt that it was a cop-out to have a child narrate a post 9/11 book because of the lack of emotional maturity…..Anyway I was excited to read the book but now my enthusiasm has waned.

I think that this Slate discussion gave some good rationale for using a kid, even an unlikable kid. JSF gets a lot of shit for trying to write in a different way than the typical narrative – just like Dave Eggers, who the authors of this discussion also discuss as a lightning rod for enmity. From what I’ve read, I am still interested enough to give it a go.
